Multi-million-dollar health projects now underway at MHPH
Jul 06, 2022

A combined 22-million-dollars in projects to improve facilities and patient access is now underway at Mildura Health Private Hospital (MHPH). The projects include the multi-million-dollar Mildura Health Icon Cancer Centre, as well as expansion of operating theatres and patient recovery areas at MHPH.

MHPH Chief Executive Officer, Marcus Guthrie said the state-of-the-art Cancer Centre with bunker will house a radiation machine called a Linear Accelerator for private and public radiation treatment, chemotherapy bays for privately insured medical oncology patients, consulting rooms for cancer support services and patient education rooms. The public radiation oncology model of care will be provided by ICON who specialises in cancer care throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia”, said Mr Guthrie.

Building works at the Mildura Health Icon Cancer Centre located in Healthscope Court commenced in December and extensive foundation and concrete slab works have been completed for the radiation bunker to date. The Centre is on track to open in the latter half of 2022.

Mr. Guthrie said the bunker required specialised design and structural engineering considerations. The bunker consists of a 1100mm thick concrete ground slab with concrete walls ranging from 1100mm to 2100mm thick.

The second project currently in progress is the 12-million-dollar redevelopment and expansion of MHPH facilities. This includes two dedicated endoscopy theatres from the existing theatre footprint and building of three new operating theatres. To compliment the operating theatre design, both stage 1 and 2 recovery areas will have increased bed numbers with an open plan layout for improved clinical oversight. The works will entail construction of a new Central Sterilisation Store Department aligned with changing regulations. The project also improves the hospital’s bulk store capacity, staff change rooms and staff tearoom.

Mr Guthrie said that both key projects are important health projects for our region. Extensive regional health modelling and planning was completed to ensure both projects can service the region’s growing population, inclusive of surrounding catchment areas, long into the future.

King Construction Group, Managing Director, Dale King said King Construction Group are very proud to be associated with the Construction of the new Mildura Health ICON Cancer Centre and MHPH extension and refurbishment. The new buildings will bring specialised facilities and treatment never available previously to our region.

“This has been a fantastic joint effort by both MHPH and ICON, together with King Construction and Constructive Group to bring the construction of the projects to fruition.” he added.
